Importing a bike from UK
« on: February 15, 2012, 12:15:18 PM »

Guys

Does anyone know the import costs (apart from shipping) for bringing a bike in from UK?  I have a bike slowly rotting in a shed over there that I'm tempted to ship over as I have no idea when I'll ever get back to it and I like the idea of having a project bike here more than a dead one in the UK.

I have a quote for door to door sea shipping of around 600 sterling which is just about bearable but what will it cost me to get it registered etc. here?

5% duty on the value, best get it valued by a local bike shop before you leave and claim it on the shipping docs so there is a concreate value when it lands.....clearly this can be adjusted to suit either party.  Also ensure you get the green import certificate as you cant regester it without it.

You'll probably have to go to customs with the shipping agent just to show face and prove its yours.  other than that its easy.

For £600 I'd also check airfreight.  Cost me £900 to fly 2 triumphs over when seafreight was £650 at the time.

I've been quoted 1500 for air freight which frankly is more than the cash value of the bike as it sits in current condition.  It's a '96 VFR 750 so not worth a lot of cash but but I like it and if I can get it here reasonably cheaply it seems like a good idea.

Welll...

Mine came on a boat for about 500 quid as far as I recall, and I don't recall any "extra" costs worth mentioning. Of course it was 8 years old and of "minimal value", or at least, thats what I told everyone....

All I had to do to collect was sign something & pay, I forgot what to be honest, goto warehouse, open crate, bung a battery & fuel in it and blast off. :)  The shippers got it out of customs etc. Then get it registered, which was also dead easy in fact (basically, just go there (testing centre) clutching the original UK reg, get it "MOT'd"  (tested) and get a reg. number allocated to you).

Dougie,

It's time you laid that old nail to rest, it's probably rotted away by now anyway!!

Rich

You are probably right or if not rotted away by now it isn't going to last long but it was in good nick 4 years ago when I parked it in the shed and I figure if I can get it here for under a grand it is cheaper than buying something else here.  I've been thinking about it for so long now I'll probably never get around to it though.

I hesitate to dip my fly in anyone's ointment, but isn't there some rule about the machine being a maximum five years old to get it imported and registered? Or is that just Qatar?

I got a 1993 model imported and registered in Dubai, no problem at all.

I had the same problem, I was storing my faithful old GS1000 in my cousins garage for 3 or 5 years then I received a message to say that he didnt want it there anymore and was going to get rid of it. I called a freight company here (UHS Freight), they sent their agent in the UK to get the bike, crate it up and shipped it over to my doorstep here in Dubai, all for under 1000USD. Not bad.

For 1000USD/£650, etc shipping, plus the import duty of 5% and the hassles involved, isnt it cheaper to buy an Suzuki RF400 or something else in sharjah (jap import) for under 5 grand ? ???

And it will work and be in a decent condition.

Just a thought
