Caterham in Dubai
« on: May 30, 2011, 07:11:40 PM »

Hi guys,

as im a newbie here in the forum short introducing. 40 years German 3 Years in Dubai.....so enough ;:-)

I need a prober road car after im getting tired about sand ;-)

Im looking for a caterham, have some experience with super sevens in general but im concerned about the bloody speedbumbs here. How is it to drive them? Possible or very very difficult?

How is the spare part market? Something here available or everything must be shipped from UK?

ok enough for the moment

regards

Hi Guuuude and welcome to the 'Nuthouse'  :fing34:

There are quite a few caterham fans on the site (including our ships captain, Biggles) so I don't think you will have to wait too long for a reply... ;D

In the mean time, have a nice stay and we hope you enjoy the ride

Welcome to the Nut house Guuuude!

Well proper road car you say, well I have no experience with Caterhams but I am sure Biggles and others who have owned them can give you some advice around here.

Btw dont you think its too hot to drive a Caterham without AirCon in this weather?

I used to drive my heavily tuned patrol in this heat with the windows down (to enjoy the sound) up until last year before I sold it.
Also was driving the Mustang with the Top down over the weekend (at night), the doc said its bad for my eyes (they were infected) but who cares.

I run a caterham here in Dubai. Great fun it is too (and I say that having had more than my fair share of unrepresentative problems with mine(. There are plenty of others, a westfield or two plus a few GTS's. Don't think there are many that are run as main cars though. Speed bumps are generally okay if you're careful, although I have cracked my sump before now when I didnt spot one before it's too late. The heat is the biggest problem though. Too hot for me (and I am, as a result of a previous head gasket failure, paranoid about mine overheating) but you may be made of sterner stuff.

Gulfsport have the regional franchise and if you want a new one you have to go through them (Caterham won't supply direct out here). Parts are generally not a problem - Gulfsport can supply (although they don't maintain stock) or you can order from Caterham direct. Many parts are made by other car manufactuers and so available locally (e.g. from Al Tayer for engine parts, which tend to be from ford). They're generally dead easy to work on too, relatively speaking.

Second hand ones crop up from time to time out here. From another thread it looks like another member (bigmac?)picked up a cheap GTS recently, and I think Jason at A2B may be looking to sell his too. I'm a big fan of doing the build yourself though.

Chris is quite correct I did indeed pick up a GTS from the Dubai Autodrome as they are selling them off but is is a track car and not a road car. Theres a track day on Friday evening come and have a look. By the way the Autodrome is also selling of some of the single seaters if anyone wants one.  :hiya:

I don't think you'll find Gulfsport open on a Friday. Not sure about Saturdays either.

One thing to watch with some Caterhams in Dubai is that not all of them are registrable. Something to do with missing import documentation.
