VPN & Mac
« on: January 06, 2012, 07:30:25 PM »

If say I had a Mac and I wanted to connect to BBC iPlayer in the UK, is there a safe, reliable and free VPN that I could use?

Of couse being a Microsoft man this situation would never occur

I've got Banana but find it very slow and not impressed.
Will not be renewing with them next time, will give someone else a go.

Try these:
www.simplevpn.co.uk if you want decent speed with low number of users per server - £10.00 a month - 7 Day Free Trail but you need to sign up with paypal to get the trial.
Or https://www.quickvpn.co.uk/ for lower cost (£5.99 a month) but slower speed and more users per server. 24hr free trial available just need email address for the trial.

Both use PPTP protocol so work with iphone, android, windows, mac etc..
Both work in UAE.

If you need more info send me a PM.

Hi,

-With Banana you need to (a) use right server, there are several, and (b) be using SSTP (Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol) not normal old VPN setup. Otherwise you'll get rate limited by Etisalat (and that applies to all VPNs, whoever provides them...).

Some VPNs perhaps provide that SSTP feature automatically, I don't know, but I wouldn't have thought so?

If not using SSTP or some other further encryption layer, after a period of time, ranging up to 20 mins or so your vpn will slow down as Etisalat progressively deliberately throttle it to a crawl to discourage you...

"A friend of mine" uses focusvpn. It's about £ 6 a month from memory and my friend uses a Du internet account and hasn't noticed any problems with download speeds after 20 minutes for example. I have   He has no problems streaming an hour long programme for example.

According to my friend's wife, all the information you could possibly need to know about setting up a VPN, or knitting a nice warm steering wheel cover, is available on the ExpatWoman website. Allegedly.
