When is it time to get a Rotax?
« on: January 17, 2012, 07:00:51 PM »

Since September I have been visiting the Kartdrome and Al Ain Raceway on a regular basis. My current times at the Kartdrome are in the 1.13's and in Al Ain im in the 1.25's.

Now I think im at the level where I will only get better if I practice more often. The only thing that annoys me is the difference between the rental karts. I even experience this in Al Ain when I joined one of their open races. For qualifying and the first race I had a kart which I could only get do 1.27's in. For the last race I got a new kart and was consistently doing 1.25's and managed to finish 5th after starting 14th.

So this has got me thinking about buying my own kart. But im a little stuck. Do I go all out and buy a fairly good second hand Rotax Kart which I am able to race. Or do I hold out and try to by a cheap one with the intention of just practicing and having fun?

Also whats the level of racing like in the Rotax series? And what are the running costs like for a typical race season? I dont currently have endless cash to throw at Karting and I think I would really struggle to compete at a high level for a while due to my ability.

And does anyone know of anyone who is currently giving lesson's or advice on how to improve? I am tempted to try some of the private tuition at Al Ain.

Any advice would be great.

Thanks in advance Dan  :)

Tuition at Al Ain is a good start.

As for buying a kart, it's better to start with a second hand one.  There are 2 Chassis agents here, Al Ain sell Intrepids and a French lad sells Birels.

There are quite a few second hand karts floating around right now, but i suggest one of the 2 makes above as you can get spares.  Something like a CRG or TonyKart, albeit good karts, you'll have to get parts from overseas which naturally adds to the cost.

The engine has to have an Al Ain seal on it and come with engine card, without these it wont be allowed to race.  Write down the seal number and check with Al Ain that the engine is pukka.

Make use of the dubai round this weekend, there are lots of people who will be more than happy to help, and i'm sure a few who will just like to moan!  Same as everywhere, dont let them put you off!! ;)
