looking for car racers for video shoot at Jebal Hafeet
« on: January 23, 2012, 12:42:39 PM »

Hello! We're writing from a video production company and are looking car racers who are available during the weekdays to show off their fancy cars and moves on the roads of Jebal Hafeet. Do get in touch if you're interested and we'll be in contact.

Thank you for your time!

Calling Geordie640 & Zlako   :box2:

Actually Dan & Neil's rides would look good, Spencer they could record you coming down the hill in either the BMW or PetrolHeads 2  :bolt:

Hi Daphne

If this is a commercial shoot, I'm assuming you have;

1) The required license to be filming a commercial shoot at a given location
2) Police permission to be using the road for a commercial shoot
3) Police permission for drivers to be 'showing their moves' (whatever that means) on the road
4) The required 3rd party insurances in place
5) A very large budget to pay for the drivers' time / wear and tear on the cars / petrol

Because if not, a lot of people are going to spend a lot of time explaining themselves to the Police. This is PRECISELY the sort of thing they go looking for up there!

And if it's not a commercial shoot, what's it for? Having a friend film you in your own car is one thing, but when a production company is asking for drivers and cars, then it's commercial...and you have to pay.

Hi TimA,

Yes it is a commercial shoot. permissions underway, police have been contacted. Perhaps you can qualify what you mean by 'Big Budgets'? While the shoot is meant to make the drive look exciting, how we conduct it might be very tame indeed. I would prefer to speak directly to interested parties about the project on your listed points 3 & 4, with an interest and willingness to cooperate.

Thank you for your time!

Well I don't know what your budgets are Daphne, or the client's expectations, but I've driven on a few shoots for adverts filmed in Dubai and been paid a Thousand Dirhams for my trouble, each day. And that was in cars provided by the car companies for whom the adverts were being filmed, and at locations within 30 mins drive of my home. Video and film production ain't cheap, and if you need props like fast cars, and drivers prepared to show them off, you need to take into account the hours spent driving to Jebel Hafeet and back (that's close to a four hour round trip from Dubai for example at legal speeds), the tyre & brake wear, and the petrol, plus a consideration for the 'performance'.  At the very least I'd say you need to price up renting something like a Porsche 911 for the day, and doubling that amount, per car & driver combination. Which should take it to at least a couple of thousand I'd guess, probably a lot more?

I'm not trying to put anyone off, or cause you a problem - quite the opposite. If you are doing things properly, with permissions and insurances in place, then the cost of reimbursing a handful of 'performers' shouldn't be a problem in the grand scheme of things.

Edited;

And can you please tell us how many hours you'll need your drivers on site - and what hours they are? In my experience, I've been required on site one hour before sunrise, and left the location pretty much one hour after sunset, each and every time, because the light for filming is better during those "golden hours" of dawn and dusk. But that usually leads to 10 hours of monotonous boredom between the two!

Yep, Tim is right, although I am a lot cheaper than he is, as I don't have his good looks and star qualities....

Biggles, have your people call my people, and I'll let you in on a few secrets. Sorry, I can't help with the 'cheap' bit though  ;D

Though not this week - my diary's full lovey; Kirsten, Demi and I are in Cancun.

Yes Tim, those are the chores of production i'm afraid -- hours waiting for set-up, hours waiting for the right light and considering fair reimbursement to talents and their 'props' if hired together. This is not a shoot to feature any make of car, it's something quite different, and I can be less cryptic about the project with serious parties on this forum.

You sound like a talent once-burned, so thank you for your feedback, it makes us better producers.

We thought we'd give a shout-out here as it seemed mutually beneficial IF car enthusiasts wanted to be featured with their rides on a commercial platform, while we're looking for a pair of (car+driver), for better control during shoot. The company is also looking into renting the cars separately instead.

Hours i cannot advise just yet, until i recce the space this afternoon.

Thanks,

D

Hi Daphne

Nope, never been burned - but that's because I've learned to ask the right questions. I've always taken jobs like this mostly for the fun element - I've always considered the payment as a bit of pocket money I earned while I was having fun.

Given the choice between sitting in my office driving a PC, or driving a 4x4 across the desert chasing a camera car and trying to keep exactly two feet from a boom mounted Steadycam, and I'll take the driving job every time.

Since, as you say, you are getting the requisite permissions and clearances, and have answered my questions openly on this forum, I wish you the best of luck with the shoot.

Daphne, if you can get permission from the police to allow me to blast an unregistered track day clubman car up and down Jebel Hafeet, I AM AVAILABLE ANYTIME AND ILL PAY FOR MY OWN PETROL!!!!. Sorry Tim A if I am breaking down conditions by volunteering to do it for free, but a fang up the mountain without the cops waiting for me is high on my list of priorities.
